Specialist Language Teacher Receives Prestigious German-British Friendship Award

Our Specialist Language Teacher, Michelle Massey, has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to language education after receiving the German-British Friendship Award – Network Champion for German.

The award was presented at the German Embassy’s annual Sommerfest der deutschen Sprache, a flagship celebration of German language teaching and learning in the United Kingdom. Hosted at the German Embassy and attended by educators, advocates, cultural organisations and language leaders from across the country, the event highlights the impact that language education has on building international understanding and strengthening relationships between nations.

The awards were presented by the German Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Susanne Baumann, who praised the commitment and dedication of those working to promote German Language learning.

Recognising Excellence in German Education

Michelle was one of five recipients honoured with the German-British Friendship Award – Network Champion for German. The award recognised individuals who have made a significant contribution to promoting German language and culture, while helping to strengthen educational and cultural ties between Germany and the United Kingdom.

Michelle received the award in recognition of her exceptional dedication to making the case for German language learning through the development of professional networks, advocacy for language education and her commitment to excellence in the classroom. Her work has helped create opportunities for young people to engage with languages and cultures beyond their own, while supporting fellow educators and contributing to the wider languages community.

The award citation recognised her role in building networks and setting standards of excellence in the teaching of German as a foreign language in the United Kingdom, thereby nurturing German-British relations and strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two nations.

A Celebration of Languages and International Friendship

Ambassador Susanne Baumann reflected on the importance of language teachers and advocates in creating opportunities for future generations.

She wrote:

“We know about the extraordinary work teachers and advocates of German do day in and day out. Their dedication opens doors and inspires. Danke to all those who do this work to open doors to new cultures, friendships & opportunities.”

The Sommerfest der deutschen Sprache serves not only as an awards ceremony but also as a celebration of the vibrant community of teachers, academics, school leaders and cultural organisations who work tirelessly to ensure that language learning remains a valued part of education across the UK.

Guest of Honour: Tony Woodcock

Adding to the occasion was this year’s guest of honour, former England international footballer Tony Woodcock.

Best known for his successful playing career with Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and German side 1. FC Köln, Woodcock shared reflections on his experiences of living and playing in Germany. His insights into football, language and culture provided a fascinating perspective on the benefits of embracing new languages and cultures.

Celebrating a Well-Deserved Achievement

Michelle’s award is a testament to the passion, expertise and commitment she brings to language education every day. Through her work with students, colleagues and professional networks, she has become a powerful advocate for language learning and an ambassador for the opportunities that languages can create.

Her recognition by the German Embassy reflects not only her personal achievements but also the wider importance of language education in helping young people develop the skills, confidence and cultural understanding needed to thrive in an increasingly connected world.

The award follows a challenging but rewarding year for Michelle. 2026 saw her launch Language Fest North West through our work as the Kinder Language Network. The festival is the first of its kind in the North West, bringing together language educators to celebrate the work they have done as well as develop and create new networks and partnerships. We welcomed schools from across the whole of the North West to our flagship Transforming the Future of Language Teaching event at the Etihad Stadium. The event has been renewed for the 26/27 Academic Year and we look forward to sharing further details in the near future!

Michelle was honoured alongside fellow award recipients Karoline Oakes, Dr Charlotte Ryland, Christoph Weaver and Jenni Bindon, all of whom have made significant contributions to promoting German language and culture throughout the United Kingdom.
